Chemical Name: Magnesium Chloride
Chemical Formula: MgCl2
Definition and Areas of Use:
Its chemical formula is MgCl2 and it is an inorganic and irregular compound. Magnesium chloride, which is soluble in alcohol and water and partially but not completely hydrolyzed when heated, has many uses. It is used as a de-icer in road icing by taking advantage of the freezing point of liquid magnesium chloride. Because of this feature, it is also called an de-icer. It is known that the purest ones are obtained from seafood in Japan.
The source of magnesium is seawater according to the Dow method. Magnesium oxide is obtained from the mixture of lime with sea water. After the reaction of this magnesium hydroxide with chloride acid, magnesium chloride is formed. The crystal water contained in it is heated and removed from the environment. Water that cannot be removed is melted in the electrolysis container. Magnesium is formed by volatilization during melting.
It is used in a wide range of areas, mainly in pharmaceuticals, medicine, cement, chemistry and metal.
Usage areas
- It is used in drilling and grinding wheels in the cement industry.
- In chemical production and powder binding
- In magnesium metal production
- It is used as an additive in textile and paper.
- In fireproofing agents
- It is used in disinfectants, ceramics and fire extinguishers.
- The liquid form of magnesium chloride is sprayed on the roads before rainfall or on the ground before frost to prevent snow from sticking to the road. When used as an anti-icing or de-icing agent, the corrosivity of magnesium chloride can be reduced by adding other chemicals to the solution.
- It is used as a binding agent in highways, mining, oil and gas industry.
- It is used in animal feed and fertilizers.
- It is used in wastewater enterprises.
- It is used as a disinfectant in pools.
- It is used as a coating in fire extinguisher formulations.
- It is used as a powder binder in the chemical industry.
- In medicine, it is effective in indigestion and constipation.
